Lucked out by booking this special AirBnB listing in Yoshino for a couple of days during summer holidays.
Yoshino Cedar House is a community center located in Yoshino, Nara Prefecture. I first experienced the structure when it was on display at the House Vision 2016 Tokyo exhibition, designed by Kenya Hara. The house itself was designed by Go Hasegawa. It’s a beautiful structure made with Japanese cedar from the Yoshino district. From Tokyo it was moved to Yoshino in Nara. Situated along a beautiful river, the listing is now organized by the local community who rent it out through AirBnb to help rejuvenate the community. A very cool project. The listing can be found here.
When we went a group of young architecture students from a local university were playing host. They let me play with and comment on their treehouse models they were working on for a school project. Having them there made a great atmosphere for sharing and conversation.
I highly recommend you try and make a reservation and experience the local community while having a very comfortable home base while traveling.
Photographing the local community and house for a couple of days was so much fun. The wide angle lens of the T3 was a good selection and the combination of BW and color film was a win.
