Travel Notes
I remember being stuck in Tokyo and watching the people of Hong Kong fight for their city. I felt helpless and sad.
After a couple of months I booked a ticket to see what it was like on the ground. I joined the June 12th rally which brought an estimated 2 million people out onto the streets in protest. That's 1 in every 3.5 people that live in Hong Kong.
I marched through the city with protestors of all ages and sizes including many children and elders. I marched for the hope that one day I could introduce this city and culture that I loved to my children.
I photographed protestor Marco Leung Ling-kit atop Pacific Place shopping center minutes before he fell to his death on June 15th.
Unfortunately, I made all the wrong photography decisions. I was shooting film I was uncomfortable with and using a point and shoot with a limiting fixed lens. It was a good reminder that I have a lot to learn in thinking and planning of what kind of trip and photos I plan to be taking during a trip. If only I had brought my Leica...
If you are unfamiliar with the fight for democracy in Hong Kong This American Life has done some thoughtful storytelling reporting.

If you're able to donate I recommend looking into the Human Right Foundation and the non-profit Hong Kong Free Press.
