“Welcome to Mexico. Don’t lose this paper.” says the immigration guy as he stamps my passport. Another journey begins.
GUADALAJARA /// 10.18-23
-University town
-Downtown city layout is wide streets, lots of people-only streets
-All of the public clocks work are broken and do not move
-Buses seem to be the easiest way to move around this region of the country. I've been buying "1st class" seats which are like airline sized seating without the stewardesses
-Every evening of my stay I stumbled upon beautiful music:
-Mexican orchestra in old downtown gezeebo with old people dancing
-Two Classical guitarist concerts over two nights
-Noticed everyone in restaurant and public drink a lot of sweet fizzy drinks or eating ice cream
-People often lugging 2L bottles around town
-City buildings are beautiful old buildings with huge (often politically related) murals, usually with open courtyards. Really enjoy watching politicians come and go with their body guards
-Mexican people LOVE pizza. Little Ceasars has line-ups out the door during meal times
-After sitting beside a cute old man in silence on a park bench for 5 minutes he gets up and says, "well my friend, it's time for me to go to work." and leaves. GOLDEN.
-Day trip to lovely TLAQUEPAGUE town, beautiful small traditional Mexican town. Main market is excellent
-Parks are an amazing place to people watch and chill. Old buildings/courtyards with water fountains and gardens are well kept
-Most couples are affectionate in public which is alarming coming from reserved Japan. I'm surprised at myself for being so surprised at this fact
-Lola, a night staff at the hostel I am staying at is very sweet. He is studying mechanical engineering at the local university. He says every Mexican knows of Japan because of Dragon Ball Z and Evangelion. He's so excited to meet someone from Japan and I don't have the guts to tell him I am actually from Canada.
-The international student bunking with me in the Hostel has been staying in Guadalajara for 3 months and has been robbed 4 times
SANTIAGO DE QUERETARO /// 10.26-28
-The old "centro" part of town is lined with unique bushes. Creates a unique identity to the city, adds more green to the city color palette, and creates some pockets of privacy. What a great idea
-In the middle of Centro is a beautiful city square with flowers and a gazebo called Zenea Garden. I spend most of my time watching people and eating tacos
-Local delicacy is a bag of crushed Nacho Doritos chips filled with cabbage, lettuce, beans, and salsa. It is served in the Doritos chip bag. It is absolutely DELICIOUS
-Some women wear club clothes to church
